Reflections- M15

1. What were you expectations for this course and where they met?
My expectations were met for this course because I was interested in learning more about different forms of art, various types of media, and more about art history.

2. Now that you've been through this course, What is art? How would you define it now compared to your intial posting?
I defined art as a form of expression using music, dance, writing, drawing, or painting. Art is a creative skill that is used to portray visual representation, imagination, or even emotion. I would still identify art as a form of expression because it is a way for people to communicate their feelings or thoughts, and imagination.

3. Who was your favorite artist in your original posting and who is your favorite visual artist now? If there is a difference, why do you think so? If you have the same favorite artist, why do you think so?

My favorite music and poetry artist is Reyna Biddy, and it honestly still remains Biddy because I am able to relate to a lot of her work and her experiences. While completing one of the projects, I remembered that my favorite artist used to be Frida Kahlo, she was a Mexican painter that painted many self-portraits and works about her culture. The main thing I liked about her work is that often times she painted things that were happening in her life that represented her story, and it carried a legacy because her story still resides with her different works of art.

4. Now that you've completed this course, how do you feel about taking an online course? Is your answer the same as it was in your first posting? How is it the same or different?

I think this online course with very manageable in the beginning of the semester compared to others that I have taken. However, once COVID-19 caused all things to be remotely completed it did make taking this course a bit difficult. I say that it was difficult because it was a lot trying to manage my actually major core classes and an online elective. Although this class was already online, my main core classes workload was already a bit much and to add the elective course work too was a lot.

M14: Art Analysis

1. Use the vocabulary you have learned in class to describe this artwork or performance in detail.
The artwork is a three dimensional piece that creates a sense of movement within the picture and represents unity by the various forms of elements and principles that are used. It is representational and abstract because it has a mixture of recognizeable objects like people, face feautures, animals, and a building.

2. What processes were used to create this work? What social influences might the artist be responding to and why?
The process of sketching was possibly used to create this work and a mixture of collage images that were depicted. The social influences could have been medieval times and political influences; classical and Renaissance art.

3. What is the relationship of this work to the time and society in which it was created? Describe the symbols used to express this relationship.
During the Renaissance or Medieval times is associated with this art; due to the structure and humanism within the piece. The movement in the piece can represent emotion and chaos revolving around politics and religion.

4. Identify elements in the work that evoke a persuasive or emotional response. Be specific about what those responses are and why.
The movement in the piece shows an emotional response because it appears to be feeling in action. Different forms and lines are used within the piece to depict figures or objects, value within the art of light and dark, space or shape, and mixed content.

5. Evaluate what you perceive to be the strengths and weaknesses of the work.  Apply discipline specific vocabulary and concepts when describing your point of view.
The strengths are the depiction of emotion of the faces and shown within the whole piece, it makes the picture feel as though it is in motion. The weakness is the lack of color used because it probably would have been easier to depict what is happening or more symbolic parts in the piece if there were some parts in color.

I thought this was an amazing idea for the final artwork because it was a closing piece that could have represented different things for people. For me personally, I enjoyed this assignment because it was a closing chapter for me that I was able to portray within the self-portrait.
