Art Making Project 1

While creating the value scale it was interesting trying to stay inside the boxes while shading. Usually, shading can be messy while creating your artwork so it was different for me trying to casually stay neat and inside the each box. Also, after I took the photo of my value scale I thought that my scale looked much better because I could see the difference from black to white. For my color wheel I used chalk pastels because I do not like to use acrylic paint for a medium and I did not have the colors I needed. I did not anticipate that I would be able to depict the colors in my wheel for secondary colors but it actually came out better. I was actually able to mix the colors to get green and magenta. I did have a separate sheet of paper that I was testing the colors on before drawing it on my wheel because it depended on the way I was holding the chalk pastel or how hard I pressed with it for the colors to come out correctly. But, I enjoyed working with the chalk pastels best because you never know how your artwork can turn out with blending, pressing firmly, or erasing. I thought the videos were self-explanatory for the color wheel and value set; although the explanation about the way you hold your pencil is important in shading. But overall, I enjoyed creating both the value scale and color wheel using pencil and chalk pastel mediums.

Project #1 Reflection

I had a lot of difficulty creating the slideshow or animation for this project. The process towards the end was extremely frustrating because I have never used google photos, and there was not an option to create a slideshow. However, I did create a animation with my photos but the speed of the animation was so fast that you could not take a glance at my pictures. Therefore, I made a separate posting on my blogger to illustrate my photos and I labeled them. I also selected the pictures in order from my gallery and they still would not upload in order. This was another issue I had while trying to compromise since I could not figure out how to work google photos. But, I posted my photos and labeled them in the blog.
On the other hand, I really enjoyed this project simply because I take a lot of pictures of mostly everything. I was able to go through my photo gallery to actually determine which type of element or principles my photos were associated with. This step was different and new to me because I have not used those terms in art in a long time. It was interesting trying to take photos and edit them to determine which element or principle it looks more alike. Overall, the project's technology was challenging but the knowledge base of the project was intriguing.

Brain and Color

Throughout the video, color is identified as a visual perception essentially described by the things that we wear, eat, and our emotions similar to a language. Color is also known as an illusion that typically confuses the human visual system based on objects, shapes, and patterns. The photosensitive ganglion cells in our eyes regulate the time of the day and information. These cells have an effect on sleep structures and alertness for most people in which color cells are developed the first three months as a baby. People that are color blind learn colors by shades of grey and have difficulty with daily things like clothes, makeup, the time of day, and even foods.

The video discussed ways that emotions can be described or associated with colors. The reason that emotional reactions are associated with colors is because it is altered based on a person's experiences and development. For instance, red typically increases a person's awareness, hormones, and could alter aggressive behaviors. Blue is associated as a calm mood, cool, and warmer energy. Furthermore, the theoretical aspect of color about it being different perceptions based on culture was fascinating because I was not aware that other cultures do not describe colors the same as most English Americans does. It was interesting to see how the culture from the video describe certain objects like the sky, water, or milk by different colors than color ways Americans associate them with. Also, the way that women emotional awareness is more sensitive than men which effects the way that women perceive certain colors was impressing. It was relatable to see in the video which emotions women were associating with colors like blue is sadness, red is anger, and yellow is happy; compared to the answers that men shared in the video.

Aesthetics and Art

Based on the videos and article aesthetics examines the nature and beauty of art by experience. The videos identified several philosophers ideas about aesthetics and art over centuries. During the 19th century Leo Tolstoy theory on aesthetics is most important because he believes that art purpose is to communicate. During the 20th century art was known as an expression of emotion and the common definition of art focus was the expression theory of art. Tolstoy believed that any persons experience can be communicated and expressed through art without obvious visual meaning. This philosophers theory is important because art is self-expression and it is different for all individuals, however, artists audience can have common meanings or experiences behind the meaning in any art.

Changeux scientific view of aesthetics and art primarily focus was on emotions on the processing of art for individuals. His most important fact is "emotions are processed unconsciously before the work of art", meaning art is created based on experiences or internal feelings without individuals being aware or realizing the true meaning of their work beforehand. I agree with this statement because several occasions I have created artwork with a subconscious meaning based on my thoughts gathering ideas for the work, but I always change the true meaning of the art based on images or materials I use after it is completed. Changeux fact about emotions being processed unconsciously explains why I do not realize the meaning behind my artwork until is it finished. Furthermore, Ramachandran scientific view of art was the use of art to please the human brain and the way it processes artwork. His most important fact is that the human brain find representation of art based on images, detail, and color. Our brains typically process different aspects of visual images like creating an image that the brain wants to see that might not be there. Also, grouping for visual images based on colors or patterns in artwork.

Overall, the videos and article for this module were very intriguing because I did not anticipate learning about philosophers viewpoints on the meaning of art and aesthetics. I was only familiar about Plato and Aristotle's ideas and theories about art and expression prior to the readings. It was different to have a clear explanation about the way our brains process art and to be able to put identifying terms with it. The videos were informing to see how much art has evolved over the past centuries and the way our brain process the work of art.

First Blog

Tyonna F.

The process of creating my Gmail account was not difficult because I already have two separate email addresses that I was able to choose from. However, creating the blog post was a little tricky because I have never used this site before and I was unsure if I was following the steps correctly. I hope to learn about the different forms of art, media used in art, and new history in the art era. I would like to really learn about different forms of media used in art because it is very interesting to see what materials were used and how art transformed. I am open to taking an online course although at first I was not because I thought it would be more work. But, I am excited about visiting museums and learning from this online course!

I absolutely enjoyed the Growth Mindset videos because I am an advocate for learning and growing. I am believer that it takes doing things that make you uncomfortable in order for you to grow in all aspects, especially mentally. I enjoyed the well known facts about Michael Jordan and Wilma Rudolph using their set backs and hardships they faced as motivation to become successful. John Legend portion mainly applied to me because I am currently facing new challenges now as a soon to be college graduate. I started plans and followed through with my goals, and minor things have set me back but I realized I cannot be discouraged, and sometimes you have to readjust your goals. Also, he stated just because it does not work out the first that does not mean to give up which applies to having a growth mindset. I have a growth mindset for continuous learning and for myself I set goals, sub goals to reach the main goals, and I achieve.
